Fuel Surcharge

Rumpke’s primary objective is providing our customers with consistent and excellent service at a fair price. Everything costs more these days, there’s no way around it. Fuel prices have significantly increased, petroleum-based products cost more, and delivery fees and freight charges continue to climb. While many competing firms have permanently increased the cost of service substantially, we have deliberately connected fuel-related expenses to actual fuel costs, guaranteeing a cost savings for our customers if Rumpke’s fuel-related expenses decrease.

We remain hopeful that over time fuel prices will stabilize, and as they do, it is our pledge to pass those savings on to you with our fluctuating fuel surcharge rate.

Fuel-Related Costs

Diesel fuel is a main factor. In 2024, Rumpke experienced diesel fuel price fluctuations of nearly 14 percent throughout the year.

The cost to get products delivered to Rumpke has significantly increased over time. Some vendors that have never charged for delivery are now charging a weekly freight fee.

Petroleum-based products such as tires and lubricants are essential for vehicle and equipment maintenance and efficiency. In the past few years, the cost of tires has risen nearly 16 percent, moving as high as 18 percent. We’ve also had expenses increase by almost 40 percent for engine oils, lubricants and hydraulic oils.

Calculation of the Fuel Surcharge

The fuel surcharge is related directly to the national diesel fuel prices as reported by the Energy Information Administration of the U.S. Department of Energy (EIA/DOE) in its Retail On-Highway Diesel Prices Index for the Midwest Region. This index is available to the public and is widely recognized in trucking and transportation industries.

We update the fuel surcharge monthly. Take a look at the Rumpke Historical Fuel Surcharge Chart (bottom of page) and you’ll see charts with three columns for month, price per gallon and percentage.

Price Per Gallon

The price per gallon comes from the price of diesel fuel for the last week of the previous month as reported by the Energy Information Administration of the U.S. Department of Energy (EIA/DOE) in its Retail On-Highway Diesel Prices Index for the Midwest Region.

Percentage

The percentage represents the fuel component (surcharge) of your total invoice, excluding taxes. The fuel surcharge fluctuates 0.064% for every penny the price of diesel fuel increases or decreases.

Example

If the diesel fuel price per gallon was $3.531 the last week of November 2024, the fuel surcharge for December 2024 would be 16%, based on our Fuel Surcharge Table.
