The Rumpke Recycling Sorting Process

Ever wonder where your recycling goes after it is hauled away? Enjoy the sights and sounds of one of our Material Recovery Facilities as recyclables make their way from drop off, through our various sorting processes, all the way to bailing for shipment to our manufacturing partners.

Rumpke Recycling & Resource Center

The Rumpke Recycling & Resource Center in Columbus, OH, has the capability to process 250,000 tons of material from 40 Ohio counties. Designed by local architects Moody-Nolan, constructed by Elford, Inc. with recycling equipment manufactured by Machinex, the new facility will contain the newest technology, including state-of-the-art optical scanners, equipment enhanced with artificial intelligence, and a sampling station, offering a quick glimpse of material composition to help identify recycling opportunities and challenges for communities and businesses.

Glass Recycling

Container glass collected in residential and commercial recycling programs is transported to Rumpke’s regional glass processing facility in Dayton, Ohio. Rumpke’s enhanced glass recycling technology will process and recover nearly 60,000 tons of broken and mixed glass each year.

Transfer Stations

Rumpke’s team of everyday environmentalists are out pre-dawn collecting trash and recyclables. Collected materials make their way to Rumpke’s highly engineered regional landfills or state-of-the-art recycling facilities each day. But sometimes, trash and recycling make a pit stop at a transfer station before reaching their final destination. Learn more about transfer stations and see what happens!
