Rumpke Landfill Featured on Upcoming Modern Marvels Episode

CINCINNATI – Oct. 3, 2011 – The History Channel’s Modern Marvels visited Pendleton County last week to film scenes for an upcoming episode featuring Rumpke’s regional landfill.

The episode, entitled “The War on Stink,” explores the science behind controlling odors, including those efforts utilized at modern day landfills. 

“Modern day landfills are a far cry from the old-fashioned dumps,” said Jay Roberts, Director of Engineering for Rumpke. “Landfills are highly engineered to protect the environment from our trash, and many of the environmental safeguards we have in place to protect the environment also help control odors.”

One of the main ways Rumpke controls odors at its regional landfill is with its gas recovery system, which was constructed in 2007 through a partnership with East Kentucky Power Cooperative.

The 3.2 mega-watt plant owned and operated by East Kentucky Power Cooperative, converts the gases produced from decomposing garbage into electricity. The plant currently produces enough electricity to power nearly 2,000 homes in the county.

The production crew spent the majority of the day filming scenes at Rumpke’s Landfill on Bryan-Griffin Road, but later ventured out to film homes in the Duckers Creek subdivision.

The Modern Marvels episode is scheduled to air in 2012.
