Current Operations

  • Rumpke acquired the Athens-Hocking Landfill in July 2021. Located in Nelsonville, Ohio, the landfill spans over 500 acres and has over 10 full-time employees.
  • The landfill is permitted to receive up to 2,000 tons per day.
  • On average, the facility receives 750-800 tons per day.
  • The site’s largest customer is Rumpke Nelsonville Hauling.
  • Based on present volumes, the landfill has 30 years of remaining capacity.

Site Features

  • The landfill collects and disposes of about 5 million gal. of leachate per year. Leachate is hauled from the site with tanker truck to a water treatment plant.
  • Haul roads are watered daily as necessary.
  • Three ponds were constructed to collect stormwater runoff and prevent sediment from leaving the site. The ponds are inspected weekly and sampled monthly.
  • There are currently 26 groundwater monitoring wells to avoid water contamination.
  • Out of 115 acres, 58 acres are available for waste disposal.
  • The Ohio EPA and Athens County Health Department conduct regular inspections.
  • We have installed 13.5 acres of the final cap.
  • A scale house to weigh incoming trucks.
