Have you ever considered the impact your 4th of July parties may have on the environment? Independence Day is always a popular weekend for families to start up the grill, host a party and shoot off fireworks. So here are several ways to make your 4th of July party more eco-friendly this year.

Reusable Cutlery

Instead of buying plastic cups, forks, and plates, use reusable silverware and dishware from your own kitchen cabinet. This will greatly reduce the amount of garbage produced from hosting the party. If you don’t have enough pieces, there are some brands that carry party packages of silverware made from recycled material. Check out this quick guide to food waste composting at home.

Serving Dishes

Ask guests to bring serving dishes in a washable container that can be taken home after use. Make sure to refrigerate any leftovers to save them for a future meal!

Use Natural Decoration

Another big source of waste at parties is decorations, such as balloons. Try using natural decorations instead of synthetic ones. You can purchase red, white, and blue flowers to place around the party space. Purchasing washable tablecloths is also a less wasteful alternative to buying plastic coverings, because the cloth can be used for any special event throughout the year. Sparklers & Fireworks

If you’re setting off fireworks, please exercise caution to ensure your guests’ safety. Also, it’s important to have a plan in advance of how you will capture and properly dispose of remnants after the fireworks have been launched. Remember to contact your local disposal service to see if they accept fireworks.

Recycling Container Access

Encourage recycling by placing your recycling bin in an easily accessible area to encourage every guest to recycle. Be sure to check the list to see what items are accepted for recycling. Your party will surely have aluminum cans, plastic bottles, glass bottles, juice boxes, cardboard and more!

Print Out Recycling Instructions

Just because your recycling bin is at a convenient spot, doesn’t mean everybody knows what to throw in it! Solve this by printing out the list of acceptable and unacceptable items and using it as signage. Also, include recycling instructions on how to properly break down any items, such as cardboard, and to avoid any contamination, such messy food containers.

Have a Safe and Happy 4th of July!
