During these challenging economic times the demand for global energy continues to decrease facilitating falling oil and energy prices. These declining prices have a direct and significant impact on the cost Rumpke incurs to service homes and businesses. As our firm encounters the benefits of these savings it is important to pass those discounts along to our customers. Please read on for a more detailed explanation of Rumpke’s pricing program.
In 2001 like other transportation firms, Rumpke began battling the rising cost of diesel fuel, petroleum based products and supply shipping costs related to escalating petroleum prices. After absorbing the increased costs for several months (as much as 60 percent over budget in some areas) pricing adjustments became necessary to compensate for a portion of the higher costs. Acknowledging the fluidity of the petroleum market, Rumpke adopted a flexible fuel surcharge structure which ensures uninterrupted customer service and fair pricing achieved through implementation of fee adjustments corresponding to fluctuating in petroleum costs.
With this in mind, today Rumpke calculates the fuel surcharge using prices reported by the Energy Information Administration of the U.S. Department of Energy (EIA/DOE). This standardized diesel fuel surcharge appears as a single line item on your invoice.
Calculation of the Fuel Surcharge
The fuel surcharge is related directly to the national diesel fuel prices as reported by EIA/DOE in its Retail On-Highway Diesel Prices Index for the Midwest Region. This index is available to the public and is widely recognized in trucking and transportation industries. Please click on the link below for additional information about the index.

Rumpke updates its fuel surcharge monthly, and bases the surcharge amount on the corresponding diesel fuel price per gallon the last week of the preceding month according to EIA/DOE prices. For example, the diesel fuel price per gallon was $4.667 per gallon during the last week of June 2008; therefore the fuel component of the charge was 18.35 percent of your total invoice amount, excluding taxes. However, by the last week of November prices had changed significantly dropping to $2.624 per gallon, making the fuel component portion of customer bills 8.10 percent.
To ensure fair pricing and to adequately cover the cost of providing you with reliable service, we will continue using this pricing system. The corresponding fuel surcharge amounts relating to specific diesel fuel prices are listed in the Rumpke Fuel Surcharge Table. Click here to view the Rumpke Fuel Surcharge Table. The fuel surcharge includes both direct and indirect costs associated with the collection, transfer, landfill operations and material recovery facilities. The fuel surcharge amount on your invoice is not a tax or surcharge imposed by or remitted to any governmental or regulatory agency.
2009 Short-Term Energy Outlook
According to EIA/DOE the current economic slowdown will ensure declining prices in the near future. The average U.S. trade prices have fallen significantly since mid July. As always, the condition of the global economy and production decisions by members of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) continue to contribute to the overall world oil pricing structure.
As we continue to brave the ever-changing economic climate, please know you can count on Rumpke to offer you lower pricing if and when possible. We appreciate your business and look forward to continuing to serve you and the community. If you have any questions, please contact your local Rumpke office or click here to email us.
