Overview

At Rumpke, we take pride in educating the public on our waste disposal and recycling systems. Rumpke's Public Relations representatives are available to give landfill tours and recycling presentations for anyone wishing to learn more about the waste disposal or recycling industry. There is no fee for this service. All groups and schools are welcome to participate.

Recycling Bin Presentation:
This program provides an in-depth look at each of the materials collected in curbside or drop box programs. The presentation explains each step in the recycling process -- from collection through using the materials to create a new product. Samples are passed around so the students can see and feel first hand what happens to the materials they put into recycling containers.

Landfill Video or DVD:
From The Ground Up. This video explains the landfill process, from the beginning. The program begins with a brief history of Rumpke, shows the different trucks that collect the garbage and covers landfill cell construction and garbage disposal. Also discussed is methane gas recovery, leachate collection and other environmental protection procedures. Included in the video is a glimpse of Rumpke's recycling center, or materials recovery facility (MRF). This shows students the separation and preparation of recyclable materials for sale to various processing companies.

Recycling DVD (click here to view the video online):
This video explains the recycling process, from collection to new recycled products. The video covers recycling collection, how the materials are sorted at our Material Recovery Facility (MRF) and what happens after they are sent to a manufacturer to be made into new products. The video also discusses uses of recyclable items and the importance of recycling.

Tours:
Students, teachers and other community groups tour the Rumpke Sanitary Landfill in Colerain Township from the safety and comfort of a bus. The tour begins with a brief history of the company and a demonstration of how trucks are weighed. The bus then travels around the landfill while the guide shows exactly what happens after the garbage leaves their homes. Methane gas removal, leachate collection, surface water controls and other points of interest are explained. The tour concludes with an explanation of the final landfill cover and cap and then the future uses of the landfill property.
